Session Name: Mitigation~~Mitigation Best Practices~~State and Federal Mitigation Programs Designed to Reduce Identified Risks
Session Description:

This workshop will include a discussion of two mitigation programs, one State funded and the other Federal funded. The Florida’s Division of Emergency Management created a specialized, state-funded mitigation program aimed at minimizing damages caused by hurricanes – The Hurricane Loss Mitigation Program. This portion of the workshop will discuss the evolution of the program and the current standard operating procedures that equates to a cost efficient and property saving resource to the citizens of Florida. The FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) Programs enable hazard mitigation measures to be implemented before, during, and after disasters. This portion of the workshop will discuss will bring to light some of the best practices that have been implemented under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and will incorporate a collection of ideas, activities/projects, and funding sources that can help reduce or prevent the impacts of disasters as well to assist in overcoming known pitfalls. In addition, the do’s and don’ts of application development, project design, Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) development, and construction techniques will be considered.
