Thursday Schedule Detail
Session Name: Business Industry & Economic Resiliency~~Katrina From the Frontline
When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2006, like most Gulf Coast businesses, DEVENEY faced unthinkable challenges. John Deveney, president of DEVENEY, led a team scattered by evacuation through remote e-mail access within 24 hours of the storm. The team reached out to the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (NOCVB) to offer support for the organization throughout the crisis. When DEVENEY was informed of an immediate need for on-the-ground support in New Orleans to manage the onslaught of media requests, the team returned to the ravaged city and began proactively managing media on behalf of local tourism industry leaders,
establishing the New Orleans Tourism Communication and Media Center. This session explores lessons learned from the PR team that responded to Hurricane Katrina. From evacuation of the city to management of the only on-site Communication operation and media center, this session is a first-hand telling of how New Orleans managed more than $400 million in media scrutiny in war-like conditions.
